With advancements in dentistry, restorations have only gotten better than before. For instance, in the past, traditional crowns were standard and took a couple of weeks to get. This restoration, though, now has a same-day option that many patients go for. However, if you don’t know much about this convenient treatment, then you may be interested to learn more about it. Here are three interesting facts you should know to feel confident choosing them for your smile.
1.) Impressions Are Mess-Free Since They Are Digital
Impressions used to be taken with a putty you’d bite down on until it hardened enough to be removed. Many people thought this was an uncomfortable experience, but this isn’t a problem with CEREC (same-day) crowns!
Your dentist will use a special device that allows them to scan your teeth and create a virtual model of them. These are just as detailed and allow for your final restoration to sit comfortably in your mouth.
2.) Getting a Same-Day Crown Takes Just a Couple of Hours
The process of getting traditional crowns takes two appointments, which are usually two weeks apart. That’s because a skilled artisan in a dental lab has to craft each one based on a patient’s impression, then color and shade it.
This same-day option doesn’t share this timeline! It’ll only take a couple of hours for your treatment to be done, but a bulk of that is preparing your tooth. Your dentist will remove a small amount of enamel on all sides of the structure and take digital impressions.
Your custom restoration will be modeled and then sent to a milling machine. This handy piece of technology will then sculpt it out of a block of ceramic, which takes about 20 minutes. You won’t need to come back for another visit, but rather sit in the chair until it’s ready! Once it is, then you’ll get your results, and you’re all done.
3.) CEREC Crowns Are as Reliable as Traditional Options.
The convenience that these same-day crowns offer may have you wondering if they have any downsides. Many people assume the quick turnaround means they are less durable, but this isn’t the case. The high-quality ceramic that your dentist uses can last just as long as a traditional crown. That way, you can get back to a problem-free smile sooner and enjoy your results for well over a decade with the proper care.
